This is a bit lengthy, but its a decent review of the impact that the growing MICE market has had on Macau. I must sound like a broken record by now, but this is just the beginning of Macau’s transformation being brought on by LVS’ Cotai Strip.

With bigger facilities, stronger government support and faster growth, Macau has warmed itself up to fight for a share of the international MICE (meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition) market, but experts still saw some problems stand in the way of its further development.

“Macau will be developed into a city with full facilities catering for convention and exhibition, business, travel, entertainment and leisure in Asia Pacific region,” said the Macau Convention and Exhibition Association (MCEA) in a recent research report concerning the industry.

Projected income generated by convention and exhibition services in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) will amount to 368 million patacas in 2008 and even reach 1.5 billion patacas in 2015, while creating around 2,500 permanent job opportunities by 2010, according to the report.

I am probably more excited for the opening of Macao Studio City then any of the other up and coming openings. It seems like they have been doing everything right so far. This complex has enough exciting and entertaining components that it could really move the center of gravity in the Cotai away from the Venetian on the Cotai Strip®.

We still need to be cautious with our expectations though. Just because everything sounds exciting on paper, doesnt mean the finished project will come together to deliver that “wow” factor.
